What God Is
God is not thunder hiding in the sky,
Not a shadow cast from mortal fear.
Not a wrathful king with a record book,
Counting every failure, cold and severe.
God is the First, the living Source,
The truth behind all things that are.
The Father flame in the soul of man,
Nearer than the nearest star.
God is love, God is spirit,
God is truth forever bright.
God is mercy, God is goodness,
God is wisdom clothed in light.
God is Father, friend, and refuge,
God is one, yet all in all.
And every child who turns toward heaven
Hears the homeward Father call.
God is not distant from the broken heart,
Not lost beyond the worlds of space.
He lives within the honest soul,
A guiding presence, a tender grace.
He is the source of all that's good,
The destiny of every climb.
The changeless One whose patient will
Move through the fields of time.
God is love, God is spirit,
God is truth forever bright.
God is mercy, God is goodness,
God is wisdom clothed in light.
God is Father, friend, and refuge,
God is one, yet all in all.
And every child who turns toward heaven
Hears the homeward Father call.
He is not anger.
He is not fear.
He is not far from us—
The Father is here.
He is the way of the beautiful,
The source of the true,
The life of the good
Being born in you.
God is the peace no war can give,
The strength beneath the trembling soul.
The faithful keeper of eternal law,
The healing power that makes us whole.
He gives himself to mortal minds,
A fragment of his Paradise fire.
And every step toward love and truth
Lifts the heart a little higher.
God is love, God is spirit,
God is truth forever bright.
God is mercy, God is goodness,
God is wisdom clothed in light.
God is Father, friend, and refuge,
God is one, yet all in all.
And every child who lives his goodness
Joins the Father's family call.
God is the beginning,
God is the goal,
The Father of creation,
The home of every soul.
